Country Life Please note this page contains many photos and will take some time to load.
This land is very special to us and we hope you will come enjoy a few days here with us. This land has been in the Bentley side of Laura-Shay's family for many many years. Laura-Shay's Grandfather chose the spot and built the house on the hill overlooking the valley in the early 70's. He chose the location partly for the beautiful sunsets which hopefully you will get the chance to see the night of our wedding. The following are some fun photos to give you an idea of where you are coming.
This is the home of Laura-Shay's Great Grandparents, commonly know as Ma and Pa Bentley.
This home is located with in walking distance of our home and is still in the family today.
This house also sill in the family, is just across the street from Ma and Pa's home and is one of the homes Laura-Shay's Mom and Uncles grew up in as kids.
This is one of the old barns still on the property that Pa Bentley would have used.
This is what is left of an old store Pa Bentley built on a lake he made.
Laura-Shay's Mom remembers going to visit her Grandfather there during the summers and sneaking Cokes from the ice chest.
This is how you paid to fish when no one was around to collect your money!
The cost was $2.00 a day or $1.00 for a half day. You put your money in an envelope and put it in a slot.
Believe it or not, most people actually did it!
This is Bentley Lake.
We of course refer to it as Pa's Lake.
This is Lime Branch Baptist Church which dates back to the 1800's and is located next door to Ma and Pa's home place.
This is the newer Church building which dates back to the late 1960's.
Laura-Shay's Grandfather and Great Grandfather were very active in this church and helped build the church that stands today.
There is a plaque on the front that bears their names.
We have rescued many dogs here at the farm over the years. Here are some of our current residents.
Little Bit and Annie
Annie taking a run!
Dancer and Sundance enjoying a doggie ice cream on a hot summer day!
Little Bit taking a rest after hunting in the woods.
Sundance trying to look innocent after probably just peeing on that Apple Tree!
Yep! Even Journey has fun here too.
His favorite thing to do just as soon as he arrives here from the big city of LA is to go roll in the cow poop in the pasture!
That is what is on his side there!
Dancer enjoying an afternoon at the lake.
A dog that thankfully our vet found a home for after it was dumped at the end of our driveway.
Laura-Shay begged to keep her of course. She even named her Dixie!
This is Lucy. She was the first dog rescued here about seven years ago. She is the strangest of the dogs here.
She is almost wild, contrary to how this photo looks. We think she is part coyote!
This is a cow...
This is our neighbor's donkey, Edgar.
The following are some various shots around the house.
This is the front field.
This is the side yard where what is left of the fruit trees Laura-Shay's Grandfather planted for an orchard 30 years ago still stand.
In March '06, Laura-Shay with the help of her Dad, Aunt Jean and Uncle Scott
replanted new trees in the spots where the old trees had been in her Grandfather's honor.
Part of Bentley Road.
Yep, a dirt driveway...still.
This photo was taken at Uncle Scott's Walnut Tree Farm. It is a beautiful little spot of nature.
Laura-Shay taking a walk after the rain down the driveway she has walked down since she was a child.
This is a little grape vine. Uncle Scott built this years ago when he tried to make some wine!
He has tried to do a lot of things and there are remnants of his "special projects" all over the farm! This one happens to look pretty good...
We love to throw a party and eat some good food here at the farm!
Brad does a lot of the cooking and we make him dress up to do it!!!
This is Granny and Laura-Shay showing off their finished product of home made Blackberry Jam fresh from the farm.
Laura-Shay nearly burned the kitchen down, but everyone is still smiling!
These are some of the wild blackberries that grow here on the land. Laura-Shay and her cousins Jason and Jody use to pick these when they were kids.
Home made Blackberry pie, cobbler and jam!
Sometimes you just want to try the recipes on the cool whip container!
This is one of many many great meals eaten at this table.
This one is a little special however because the soup in our bowls was sent from LA to us from our dear friend and a great cook, Richard.
What a treat!
To have all this fun we have to do some work!
Laura-Shay cutting a tree...it was important... really.
Brad repainting some old metal chairs pulled out of the little building of Pa Bentley's.
One of you will sit in these when you come to visit!
Laura-Shay cutting the field. Maybe soon she will graduate to the big tractor!
What can one say about this photo really?
The following shots are of the lake where we have tons of great fun!
This is the lake you can come fish and play in if you would like!
Gone fishin...
This is Jody, Uncle Jerome, Rodney, Aunt Jean, Donnie and Jake taking a sunset ride on the lake.
Granny catching some fish too!
Brad...just before he turned this wave runner over on himself out in the middle of the lake!
Good times!
Kids being kids.
Like I said...kids being kids.
Grandmother's 85th Birthday celebration!
Laura-Shay and her cousins Jody and Kelly serving up some goodies.
Shay and Elton at Elton's surprise Birthday party!
Ches and JoAnn taking a break from too much fun!
Uncle Scott, Shelley, Claire, Brad, Laura-Shay, Rodney and Journey taking a rest atop a mountain.
Laura-Shay and Granny right before her 80th Birthday celebration.
Grandmother making a speech at her Birthday.
Jody and Brad
Rodney and the loser...
Milt in the cotton fields.
Brad and Laura-Shay. Yep, we all hate that jacket!
Timmy and Laura-Shay testing out..."if a tree falls in the forest..."
Timmy...is louder than the tree.
Sometimes you just have to take things into your own hands in the country!
She's a pretty good shot!
One of the farms greatest features... the sunsets.
